There are two types of program; a weight loss program and a fitness program for people whose primary concern is to increase their fitness and tone rather than to just lose mass. The MD of Fit Farms states that the;
weight loss results are now averaging around 7 lbs on the fitness retreat programme and 9lbs on the weight loss retreat programme
which is a significant amount of weight loss for a week long program. Fit farms have recently been named as the UK’s number one weight loss and fitness camp by The Sunday Times and The Observer.
Fit Farms Diet
All food is provided at this residential weight loss retreat. The chefs source local produce that is seasonal, and the menu changes four times a year to reflect this. Meals are calorie controlled, although some reviews suggest that the meals are too restricted considering participants are exercising for the majority of the day.
The best part of the meals available at a fit farm retreat is that before a guest arrives they fill out a nutrition questionnaire, which establishes any dietary requirements or allergies that they may have. This allows the farms chefs to make alterations to tailor the menu to each individual as best as possible. This also allows them to take into consideration religious beliefs affecting food choices.
Exercise at the camp
Exercise takes place throughout each day at the camp, and is interspersed with classes to educate guests about nutrition and fitness in everyday life. Classes are incredibly varied, and because of the physical nature of the weight loss camp, deep tissue massages are included as a part of the routine. This allows participants to work harder throughout the week, as the massages speed up recuperation time and reduce chances of injury between workouts.
Classes include zumba, pilates, kettlebell workouts, swimming and other water based activities, yoga and meditation, spinning, and cycling through local woods, amongst others. For those participants who cannot swim, other cardio-based activities are substituted, meaning that no person is at a disadvantage during their stay.
Camp Health Assessments
Upon arrival, the guests are introduced to their instructors with a welcome talk before being given the chance to bond with other guests over light exercise. The next day, before the full exercise program commences, participants undertake health assessments to measure their lung capacity, blood pressure, weight, BMI, as well as body measurements. This helps participants establish their fitness levels at the start of the week, allowing the week to be tailored to individual fitness needs.
At the end of the stay, participants again undergo a private health assessment to establish their new weight, body fat percentage, BMI, lung capacity and blood pressure. Core strength and flexibility are also measured. This allows participants to leave the camp knowing definitively how much progress they have made, as well as giving them a clear picture about their health. This, along with the numerous classes and workshops run throughout the week, help dieters to continue with their weight loss journey beyond their stay at a fit farm.
Each guest is also provided with a tailor made weight loss plan to use after their departure from the camp. This is based upon several one on one consultation with a designated mentor that takes place throughout the week.
Fit Farms Facilities
Facilities have been renovated over the past few years following negative feedback about overcrowding in the gym areas and low quality facilities. Reviews have been much more positive about the site following these renovations. All accommodation is en-suite, with no extra charges, which is unlike some other companies offering similar services.
What are the Costs?
Courses are offered on a woman’s only or mixed gender basis, allowing for personal preference about workouts to be taken into consideration. Courses run for 3, 4 or 7 nights, and are run across two UK sites in Dorset and Derbyshire, as well as one site in mainland Spain. Prices are all inclusive, for en-suite rooms, and include a detailed after care program.
A 7-night course costs £1099 for those in a shared room, and £1599 for those in a single private room. Three night weekend courses start at £599 whilst 4 night mid week courses start at £699. Occasionally there are discounts and incentives for booking within certain time periods, although this is subject to change.
A significant deposit of around 30% is required to guarantee a place on the selected course, which is payable online. The course price is fully inclusive of exercises, workshops, accommodation, massage, post-course after care programme, transfers to and from the train station, food and drink.
Customer reviews for Fit Farm Boot camps
Customer reviews are very mixed (see Trip Advisor), with some concerns about the customer service and bookings process. However, there is a lot of positive feedback about the entire set up of fit farms, with participants claiming that even though they lost a significant amount of weight in such a short time, “the course offers so much more than just weight loss”.
Many people have been impressed with their mentor and the individual attention that they received. However, the popularity of the courses leaves some concern about overcrowding, especially during group exercise classes that are run in relatively small studios.
Our Verdict on Fit Farms
It seems that once the website and bookings process has been navigated, the fit farms experience is a very positive one, allowing participants to lose weight, increase fitness and change their mentality about food and exercise in under a week.
Many of the positive reviews have inferred that their visit to a fit farm was a life changing experience. The courses are also cheaper than some of the other courses available in the UK, although it is arguable that they are still relatively expensive options to aid weight loss.
