This sounds good but looking at the ingredients list this supplement seems to contain many of the same stimulants found in other products. Let’s take a look at Phenbuterol to find out more.

Phenbuterol is a bodybuilding supplement on sale from US body building supplements company Muscle Meds Performance Technologies.
According to the product information, the way that this supplement works is uniquely different to others on the market!
It contains a range of stimulants, like most bodybuilder supplements, but the key ingredient is a clinically researched compound called 6-Paradol derived from a plant native to West Africa called Grains of Paradise. This is a spice which is very similar to ginger.
Grains of Paradise has a pungent aroma which contains a phenol compound called 6 Paradol that is believed to affect fat mass. Apparently, it works for weight loss by activating Uncoupling protein (UCP1) a protein found in brown adipose tissue cells.
All humans and mammals have two types of fat: white adipose tissue and brown adipose tissue.
Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is the layer of fat cells that are important for keeping you warm and this type of fat also plays a role during hibernation in animals.
UCP 1 is a protein that is responsible for heat generating capabilities that kick in when necessary and use energy derived from your stores of fat in order to keep you warm. This protein (once called thermogenin) helps the body deal with exposure to cold by generating heat.
The thinking behind this supplement is that by activating this heat generating mechanism, you can burn off some of your fat stored as Brown adipose tissue.
Does it work? Some clinical evidence says it might but it is early days for this ingredient and nothing is really proven yet.
To support this process, in addition to Grains of Paradise, Phenbuterol contains a range of stimulants that are more familiar in supplement use and believed to help burn fat by increasing the metabolism and energy levels.
These include Caffeine and Yerba Mate plus patented complex Advantra Z which is a mix of ingredients such as Synephrine, N Methyltyramine, Hordenine, Octopamine and Tyramine. Phenbuterol also contains Rauvolfia Serpentina– a source of Yohimbine.
We have seen all of these ingredients in many other stimulant-based supplements and they can come with some unpleasant side effects. If you have any type of heart condition or suffer from blood pressure issues this supplement will not be suitable for you.
Muscle Meds Performance Technologies is a well-known supplements company that specialise in strong body building products and is fairly well known in the bodybuilding world.
Muscle Meds sponsor world-class IFBB professional bodybuilding champion Kai Greene who is well known on the circuit and has numerous high-ranking titles to his name. He features on the website and provides some add credibility to this company.
Other Muscle Med products include Carnivor Raging Bull – 100% beef protein powder, No Bull XMT a pre workout supplement to promote muscle building and strength and Secret Sauce, which contains Bovine Serum Albumin a protein, derived from cattle blood.
Muscle Meds Phenbuterol does not contain any beef products unlike the other supplements in the range and you can take all of these supplements in combination as a stack.
The product information does not explain when to take Phenbuterol. However, one capsule is equal to one dose and we expect the idea is that you take it before your work out. It is not made clear just how many capsules you should take each day.
- Lack of product information
- The product website makes the explanation about how this diet pill extremely complicated
- Lack of evidence that it will work in the way as described
What Does Phenbuterol Claim To Do?
Phenbuterol claims to ‘generate heat and trigger thermogenesis’,
according to the product information, it does this by:
Utilizing fatty acids from stored body fat, rather than ATP from muscle tissue
(ATP or Adenosine triphosphate, is a coenzyme found in cells)
This supplement is described as having a,
Unique fat burning mechanism of UCP-1 and brown adipose tissue.
One of the key fat burning actions and benefits of PHENBUTEROL.
The Grains of Paradise content ‘is supported by naturally derived compounds such as Hordenine, octopamine, synephrine, llex paraguariensis and Rauwolfia Serpentina’. These ingredients are to provide the fat burning effect.
PHENBUTEROL is also said to exert,
powerful energizing and mood enhancing effects to take the edge off dieting.
is a potent fat burning catalyst for serious athletes looking to lose excess body fat quickly and effectively.
The language used on the Phenbuterol site is confusing to say the least!
So What Is Phenbuterol and What Are The Ingredients For Phenbuterol?
Phenbuterol is a fat burning diet pill that contains stimulants plus new ingredient Grains of Paradise believed to cause thermogenesis in BAT cells. Each serving of Phenbuterol is equal to one capsule, but the ingredient amount quantities are not provided so it is hard to judge the exact effects of this supplement.
Each Phenbuterol capsule contains 597mg of active ingredients.
- Caffeine Anhydrous: Crystallised form of caffeine but otherwise the same as you find in coffee. Caffeine promotes alertness, can reduce appetite and has a metabolism boosting effect that may help you burn off fat and calories. However once you become accustomed to caffeine these effects reduce.
- Yerba Mate Extract: Natural herbal extract taken from a South American plant. Yerba mate is often drunk as a tea in South America and it contains high levels of caffeine.
- Advantra Z (containing Citrus Aurantium extract 30% synephrine, N Methyltyramine , Hordenine, octopamine and Tyramine): This trademarked supplement contains citrus extract chemicals synephrine, octopamine, and N-Methyltyramine plus Tyramine and Hordenine derived from barley. These are described as Sympathomimetic agents, which mean that they mimic the effects of the flight or fight response.
As everybody knows from experience, this response raises the heart rate, causes sweating and other stress related symptoms. It also decreases the appetite – one reason why Sympathomimetic agents are used in diet pills. Advantra Z is a popular supplement ingredient but according to clinical investigation, ‘Sympathomimetic agents have a poor history of long-term success in the treatment of obesity.’ In addition, there are health risks. According to reports, ‘strokes and cardiac arrhythmias have been the major concern about supplements containing the sympathomimetic drug, synephrine.’
- Grains of Paradise (alframomum melegueta): This species of Ginger is derived from ground seeds and has a pungent and spicy fragrance caused by aromatic ketones chemical compound 6-Paradol. According to the product information 6 Paradol helps burn off brown adipose tissue. There has been clinical testing for this function and it does appear to stimulate thermogenesis for around three hours after taking but so far, it has only been tested on rats. Requires further evidence.
- Rauwolfia Serpentina Extract: Asian plant known as Indian Snakeroot, which contains Yohimbine a stimulant with aphrodisiac effects. The down side is that this ingredient can cause dangerous side effects such as seizure, increased blood pressure and heart problems. Yohimbine is classified as dangerous.
So What Does All This Mean?
Phenbuterol is a stimulant that will increase adrenaline levels. This supplement contains ingredients that are popular in bodybuilding supplements but they do come with health risks.
Yohimbe can be dangerous and is associated with causing seizure stroke and heart attacks. Advantra Z contains synephrine and other sympathomimetic agents, which are believed to help weight loss but lack any real evidence beyond making you feel ‘pumped up’ for the gym. If you want this effect, it may work.
However Advantra Z is a well-known branded supplement which has sold in millions around the world so although the risk of side effects is real, not everyone is going to experience problems.
The ingredient, which sets Phenbuterol apart from countless other supplements on the market, is Grains of Paradise. This comes with the claims that a phenolic compound identified as 6 Paradol works specifically on brown adipose tissue, the body fat we have to keep us warm.
The product information sounds convincing but there is very little clinical evidence to prove it. 6 Paradol only appears to have been tested on rats so far so there is no guarantee that it will work in the same way on humans.
Does Phenbuterol Have Any Side Effects?
There is not much customer feedback available for Phenbuterol but nobody appears to have run into problems. That said many of the ingredients are known for causing side effects so you do need to be aware of potential risks.
Potential side effects may include:
- Irritation of the stomach, intestine and urinary system
- Stomach cramps
- Increased heart rate
- Increased blood pressure
- Increased risk of stroke and seizure
Avoid if pregnant or breastfeeding.
Do not take if you suffer from a medical condition related to heart or blood pressure.
Avoid if you are taking prescription medication because Phenbuterol will cause interactions.
Seek the advice of your doctor before use if you have an underlying medical condition including depression or mental health issues.
Do not take if you are sensitive to stimulants.
Muscle Meds have failed to provide any health warnings, which is a serious omission.
Any Phenbuterol Reviews From Customers?
We could only find a handful of customer reviews for Phenbuterol but at first, we were quite impressed because the majority were positive. Sadly, a closer inspection of the reviewers’ histories seemed to indicate that that not all of these may be genuine.
However leaving this aside, we did find two genuine positive comments for Phenbuterol.
One customer said,
they are Greatttt!!!!!, This as all the Carnivor products are amazing .lost fat and gained muscle with a combination of all the Carnivor products enough said.
Another genuine customer said it was “Spectacular” He reported a 20lbs weight loss.
One customer was disappointed saying,
It didn’t work for me. I workout 5 times a week and have a pretty clean high protein diet. I just didn’t see the results I expected.
So Does Phenbuterol Work?
It might work as a stimulant and this in turn may help you lose weight if you harness this excess energy with working out and training. The formula contains Advantra Z and Yohimbe both well known stimulants plus good old caffeine so will undoubtedly have some effect.
We are not so sure about the ‘star ingredient’ Grains of Paradise.
6 Paradol is being investigated for several applications many as a possible treatment for cancer. One clinical test on hamsters found it may help shrink tumours. Another test on mice looked into its potential for skin cancer treatment.
The big problem here is that this ingredient has not undergone human testing for anything and when it comes to reducing fatty tissue, this is unproven and untested on humans.
If you take this supplement, you will be acting as a guinea pig yourself because there is just no evidence that it works. It may work. It may not. It is too early to tell. You cannot look at a few tests on rats and guarantee that the same results will be seen on humans. However this is what seems to have happened with Phenbuterol.
Where Can I Buy Phenbuterol?
You can buy Phenbuterol direct from the Muscle Meds website. One pack of 30 capsules costs $29.99 (discount price at the time of writing – which may increase to $49.99). Shipping costs are not provided and the company state they will only ship to addresses within the USA,
Phenbuterol is also available from Amazon. One pack of 30 capsules costs $27.90. Shipping costs are not provided but orders over $35 qualify for free delivery within the USA.
UK customers can buy Phenbuterol via Amazon. One seller is offering a pack of 30 capsules for £32.99 including free delivery to UK addresses. Another seller is offering Phenbuterol for the cheaper price of £31.72 plus a whopping £11.82.
Phenbuterol is more expensive in the UK and so far, nobody appears to have tried it.
What About A Guarantee
There appears to be no money back guarantee on offer.
Phenbuterol contains new and novel ingredient Grains of Paradise in the formula that according to the product advertising is guaranteed to burn brown adipose fat. The problem is that despite the technical sounding explanations about how it works, there is no real evidence that it is effective.
6 Paradol – the active component has only undergone extremely limited clinical testing on rodents and does not appear to have ever been tested on humans. Grains of Paradise reminds us of the claims made about raspberry ketones – another popular phenol compound believed to hold the key to weight loss yet not actually tested or proven.
If Dr Oz gets hold of Grains of Paradise, expect this ingredient to become very big in the supplements world! Apart from this ingredient, there is nothing to set Phenbuterol apart from numerous other bodybuilding supplements. It does not look as strong as many others on the market with only 597mg per serving but it contains Advantra Z and Yohimbe so will cause a stimulant effect.
Will this help you lose weight? Possibly but the strong risk of side effects are a matter for concern and when it comes down to the star ingredient Grains of Paradise, there is no real evidence it will actually work!
Phenbuterol is just not good or safe enough to add to our approved list so we have no other choice but to reject Phenbuterol.
