The Real Dose Company say that they apply the “Mom test” to all their supplements. This means that if they would not recommend a product to their own mothers, they wouldn’t recommend it to you.
You would have to be made of stone or be extremely cynical to disbelieve a claim like this and the Watchdog team feel like approving this supplement on this statement alone! We look into Real Dose to find out if this supplement really works or if it’s just some clever marketing that hits the spot.
Real Dose is a US based company located in Colorado. They market a range of supplements around diet and weight loss.
The face of the company is Dr Sisskind who is pictured on the website and as a real doctor, he adds credibility to the site and the company.
As well as Weight Loss Formula No 1, the company also sell an omega 3 supplement called Super Critical Omega3 TG, plus two diet drink supplements.
Real Meal GF is a meal replacement drink that contains protein supplement combined with whey protein.
Real Reds a powdered health drink supplement which contains extract from red berries and fruit.
According to the product information, Real Dose Weight Formula No 1, offers the following benefits;
- Increases Fat Burning
- Curbs Appetite
- Relieves Stress and Boosts Mood
- Contains 2 Ingredients Each Clinically Proven to More Than Double Weight Loss vs. Diet And Exercise Alone
According to the product info on the website, Real Dose Weight Loss Formula uses only ingredients that have been tested on humans and at the same dose as used in the clinical trials.
Apparently, this supplement works by removing all four fat burning hormonal barriers. This seems a complicated concept but essentially the ingredients in this supplement have an effect upon the hormones that lead to appetite suppression and fat burning. Although we are beginning to feel that we may be being blinded by science, it all does look extremely convincing.
Real dose Weight Loss Formula No 1 seems like it is suitable for just about everyone!
It is advertised as:
- Stimulant-free, decaffeinated and non-addictive
- 100% complementary with any meal plan or weight loss program
- All natural ingredients, Non-GMO, Vegan and certified Kosher. Contains NO Gluten, Dairy, Eggs, or Soy
To take Real Dose Weight Loss Formula 1, you take one capsule three times a day 30 minutes before meals.
The predicted weight loss seems a little vague. You are advised that you can lose up to 5 to 10lbs in the first week, although the information does state that 2lbs a week is more usual.
You are encouraged to follow the Fat Loss Fast Start Program to maximise your weight loss. We liked the sound of this but could not find any details about this plan and although the website claims that you receive this free with each order they do not give any details away.
However, according to feedback, customers have been pleased with this weight loss programme even if some have not been pleased with the supplement.
Real Dose Concerns:
- Hard to understand exactly how this supplement works
- Company appear to have ceased trading on Amazon – guarantee issues?
- Although there is a lot of positive feedback, there is a high volume of negative feedback too
What Does Real Dose Claim To Do?
According to the website;
Weight Loss Formula No. 1 Helps Your Body Convert More Food Into Energy And NOT Into Fat.
The website features the usual satisfied customer testimonials as well as an explanation about how the ingredients work plus links to the clinical references. There is an issue with this because none of these links work.
Ingredient One: The “Adiponectin Turbo Charger and Ghrelin Destroyer”. Adiponectin is the hormone that makes your body burn fat cells for energy rather than store them as fat. Ghrelin is the hormone that “makes us hungry”.
According to the advertising, this first ingredient is a patented blend of Piper Betle leaf and Dolichos Biflorus seed extracts and deliver these required effects.
Ingredient Two: “Double Action Sugar Blocker”. Decaffeinated Green coffee bean extract that inhibits the release of glucose into the blood stream.
Ingredient Three: “The Stress Killer”. This ingredient is Russian herb Rhodiola Rosea which is believed to lower the stress hormone cortisol. Meaning “you will be less likely to engage in stress related eating and binging.”
According to the information:
The result is that when you use Real Dose supplements, you experience the promised results… OR YOU DON’T PAY.
That’s easy to understand and we feel, that this company cannot say fairer than that!
So What Is Real Dose and What Are The Ingredients For Real Dose?
Real dose Weight Loss Formula No 1 contains a blend of ingredients that the makers claim will help you lose weight by addressing some common hormonal issues that can block weight loss.
Amounts given are per capsule and not daily dose.
Proprietary blend of two ingredients (300mg):
- Dolichos Biflorus (seed) extract: This climbing plant is cultivated in India for food and animal food and is known as horse gram or poor man’s pulse. It is a glycoprotein.
Betel (Piper betle) (leaf) extract. This nut in raw form is chewed in mostly Asian countries because of its mild stimulant psychoactive effects.
The two ingredients were tested together and found to have an anti adipogenic efficacy. The idea is that you burn more fat while feeling less hungry.
Clinical research tested this formula on 50 people over an 8 week period. It showed positive results and participants lost more weight by using the supplement than the placebo.
The study was carried by Sengupta K, Mishra AT, Rao MK, Sarma KV, Krishnaraju AV, Trimurtulu G in India. Prior to the human trials, the same team also tested the formula on mice and found equally positive results. Source: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23270333
- Svetol: Decaffinated green coffee bean extract (133.33mg, 400mg per daily serving). Unroasted or immature coffee beans are high in chlorogenic acid. This is believed to be- linked to weight loss because it inhibits the release of glucose into the blood stream.
Most clinical trials suggest that green coffee bean extract caused some weight loss although in some cases results were minimal.
Svetol is a patented brand and contains a decaffeinated form of Green coffee bean extract, which means you will not get the caffeine side effects. Source: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2943088/
- Siberian Rhodiola Rosea extract (113mg): Comes from wild plant Golden Root and is taken as a supplement in Russia to combat depression. It may have an anti fatigue effect and it seems to be effective against mild depression. According to the Real Dose information, Rhodiola reduces Cortisol levels and can reduce belly fat but there is no evidence that this works.
We can find nothing to prove this effect. However, there is evidence that Rhodiola is effective for treatment for depression and as depression can lead to over eating; we can see the link to potential weight loss. Source: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11081987
- Bioperine (5mg): Patented black pepper supplement that is used in many other supplements. It is believed to increase the effects of the other ingredients as well as contribute to fat burning.
So What Does All This Mean?
This supplement has some unusual ingredients, which directly act on your hormones, and all seem to require further proof that they will actually work.
The clinical trial that examined the proprietary blend of two ingredients looked promising for example but it is only one trial carried out on 50 people and further evidence is necessary.
We have learned from Hoodia that appetite suppressants that trick your brain into not eating, don’t always work. It is important to remember that some of the clinical testing on Hoodia looked good too, that is until it was disproved (see our Hoodia investigation here).
Yes, there is a link that low mood and depression will lead to weight gain but this does not necessarily mean that you will lose belly fat or burn fat simply by taking this supplement.
Cortisol is a stress hormone and learning how to relax and reduce stress by natural methods such as yoga, exercise or simply listening to music or relaxation therapies may be better for your health than simply taking a supplement.
Does Real Dose Have Any Side Effects?
The clinical testing for the ingredients has been quite limited although they seem safe overall. There should not be adverse effects and customers have not reported any problems.
There are a couple of health concerns around Betel (Piper betle) extract and scientists recommend further testing because it is not fully understood exactly what it does to the body. It can have adverse effects when chewed long term for example but this is unlikely to be a problem here.
Caution: Avoid if pregnant or breast feeding.
If you suffer from a medical condition or are taking medication, ask your doctor before taking.
This supplement does seem pretty safe but as with all supplements, there may be interactions with your medicine or specific medical condition.
Any Real Dose Reviews From Customers?
There are a lot of customer reviews left by genuine consumers of this diet pill and opinion seems to be split firmly down the middle. Some customers are very satisfied and roughly, an equal number are not.
One satisfied customer reported,
I have been on many diets with no luck. So far, I have lost 13 lbs with this product and am very happy. I will continue to purchase til I am where I want to be.
There is no magic pill for weight loss. I needed a boost for my diet/ exercise program. I like this product and will buy it again.
Other customers are not as happy.
I find this product worthless. It made absolutely NO difference in my appetite or metabolism. Just another worthless scam for overweight people desperate to try anything!
Another customer mentioned the book that comes with the product;
Look, the only way you would lose weight taking these pills is if you follow the diet in the accompanying book. If following the diet were the easy part then we would all be skinny.
A lot of money for something that seemed to have little/no noticeable difference in my weight loss regimen – wasn’t impressed
Real Dose has been quick to respond to negative feedback.
According to one of the customer service reps;
The Healthy Life Program assists our customers in their weight loss efforts. This is a free service to our customers that provides additional support and offers tips, tricks, exercises and recipes in addition to nutritional advice.
The representative went on to say;
We do have a 365-day guarantee on all of our products. Please contact Amazon for your refund. If for any reason they will not refund, feel free to contact us. We’ll be happy to refund for you.
We are impressed. Sadly, this good impression is spoilt by Real Dose Weight Loss Formula being no longer available from Amazon.com.
So Does Real Dose Work?
It might be worth a try and it might just work for some people. There are a lot of positive customer reviews.
We like the fact that the Real Dose Weight Loss formula is stimulant free and that there has been some clinical trials around the ingredients, which have been carried out on humans. It seems safe too.

We are impressed by the guarantee and some Amazon customers reported obtaining a refund and are happy with the customer service.
Worryingly though, this supplement is no longer on sale via Amazon. However, the full details of the guarantee are available via the product website.
There is a lot to like about Real Dose Weight Loss Formula. The ingredients have undergone some clinical testing and we feel that this supplement may help some people achieve modest weight loss.
It has not worked for everyone but the guarantee looks good so you could try this for yourself without too much risk.
However, we are not convinced about a few issues. Is taking a supplement to reduce cortisol such a good idea for example? If you suffer from stress and your weight gain is due to depression would it not be better to sort out the root of this problem rather than brush it under the carpet with a diet pill? Would there be side effects from any of the hormonal functions?
We are always wary about recommending diet pills that seem to work solely on hormonal function. It is open to fake science and we are not endocrinologists and qualified to approve or disprove the claims.
At the end of the day, maybe we have to fall back on the Real Dose “mom” test to make the decision. Would we recommend our mums to take this supplement? No, to be honest we wouldn’t.
It’s a hard decision but for this reason, we reject Real dose Weight loss supplement.
